Many foodies are only ordering takeout during the crisis. We search for and discover some great options.
During these challenging times, family-run restaurants (like Eden Cafe) are struggling. Each customer can make a difference. Instead of spending money at a national chain, why not dine at a family-run restaurant tonight?
We’ve observed a trend amongst the better restaurants in the Woodlands lately, and that is a pivot to home-style comfort food. Eden Cafe didn’t have to change a thing; they’ve been serving up award-winning comfort food to hungry locals for a decade. We’ve dined in the restaurant, and enjoyed excellent meals; how does their food travel home?
Scanning their family-style menu, we were immediately drawn to a dish that’s often attempted but rarely perfected: The Chicken Pot Pie. This American classic combines a savory chicken stew with a pastry pie crust, and requires that the kitchen know how to cook and bake.
We should have known that the staff at Eden Cafe had mastered both. When we opened our well-packaged order, we were greeted by a gorgeous pie crust, flaky and golden brown. Grandma would definitely approve.
The family meal is more than the pie, though. The sides we selected looked appetizing as well. The generous portion of broccoli florets were bright green and cooked just enough; they held a firm consistency even after the 30-minute drive home.
Our other side, the sweet potato casserole, was dark, gently sweet, and very rich. We almost felt like we were cheating and enjoying dessert during our meal.
But how was the chicken pot pie? In a word: Satisfying. The flaky pie crust was firm and beautifully layered. The filling featured large chunks of white meat, along with plenty of carrots and peas. The thick, rich chicken roux tied it all together nicely. This dish brought us back to family meals from years ago… and didn’t require Mom to toil in the kitchen for hours.
If you’re looking for a delicious homestyle meal that requires no effort on your part, the Chicken Pot Pie at Eden Cafe definitely fills the bill. We look forward to sampling other offerings from this great family restaurant.
