The Woodlands is now home to another modern Italian concept. Called Porta’vino, this Washington Ave transplant brings a new option for fans of Italian cuisine. It’s a light, airy location, just off Grogan’s Mill guarding the entrance to East Shore.
One great feature: A BYOB option ($12 corkage) which allows picky oenophiles to bring their prized bottles to enjoy with dinner, without paying the typical restaurant 2x-3x markup over retail. It’s a great option for the serious wine lover.
We visited a couple of days after the opening, and tried a selection of items from the compact menu.
Polpette
Housemade meatballs, topped with a splash of spicy marinara, then sprinkled with pecorino. A solid, dense bite, the tasty marinara brings the heat and will waken the palate.
Butternut Squash Ravioli
Freshly made ravioli is wrapped around a compote of whipped butternut squash, ricotta and parmesan, then finished with a hint of nutmeg, crispy parsnips and fried sage leaves. The dish straddles the line between sweet and savory, and is a rich, decadent option for those in the mood for pasta.
Spinach & Artichoke Pizza
A thin but not crispy crust is painted with the house marinara sauce, the layered with fresh spinach, chunks of artichoke heart, roasted red pepper, and feta. The result is a light, healthy pizza that’s still bursting with flavor. This was our favorite dish of the night.
Coconut Cream Pie & Milkshake “No Minors”
Going back to the late La Vista on Fountainview, this Houston classic is based on a dense, thin crust, a generous layer of coconut cream, and a veritable mountain of whipped cream, finished with a generous coating of toasted coconut. We added a craveable boozy shake featuring brandy, kahlua, and vanilla ice cream.
The atmosphere inside Porta’vino is still being tweaked; it’s bright and open, and can be a bit rambunctious if there’s a big party having fun. We think it’s a great spot for an after-work stop or a dinner with that special someone. The staff impressed us with their energy and friendly demeanor; this is the kind of place where first-timers are treated like regulars, and regulars become family.
We think Porta’vino is a great addition to the Grogan’s Mill/Town Center area of the Woodlands; it’s a friendly, welcoming spot for a light (or hearty) Italian meal and a bottle of wine. We’re looking forward to our next visit!
