Los Cochinitos is a well-known Mexican restaurant chain located in Mexico City. They’ve distinguished themselves by the specialty pork dishes and roadside-style dining, offering hearty traditional fare that appeals to both families and travelers.

Now the chain has ventured out of CDMX, and their first US store is on the north side of Houston, in Spring.
Dining Experience and Atmosphere
The decor at Los Cochinitos is themed around cheerful pig imagery and vibrant colors, creating a welcoming and family-friendly atmosphere. The new Spring location features ample seating, clean restrooms, an outdoor playground for children, dog-friendly areas, and large parking lots, making it convenient for both locals and those passing through on road trips.

Signature Dishes
The menu centers on classic Mexican carnitas, served by the pound with all the traditional accompaniments like handmade tortillas, fresh salsas, and guacamole. Customers consistently praise the pork barbecue (“carnitas”) as exceptionally flavorful and tender, with generous portions ideal for sharing. Other favorites include gorditas, chicken soup, arrachera, enchiladas verdes, huevos rancheros, and an assortment of Mexican appetizers. The freshly squeezed juices and pan dulce add a special touch, especially for breakfast goers.
We sampled a half-pound of the lean carnitas, and it was a revelation. Beautifully moist and tender, with the expertly seasoned flavor that you know from CDMX. It’s rare to find carnitas this traditionally prepared in the Houston area.

We also sampled the Cochi-Snacks appetizer, a house specialty featuring small discs of corn dough, topped with cream and cotija cheese. These little bites are a great way to start your meal.

Houston Expansion
The arrival of Los Cochinitos in Houston has stirred excitement among Mexican food enthusiasts. Their menu and commitment to authentic flavors remain intact, ensuring the same pork-centric experience that made them popular in Mexico City. The North Freeway Spring location is a significant upgrade from previous establishments at the site, with excellent dishes and attentive service that rivals the chain’s original outlets. We were impressed by the authenticity of the street tacos and desserts available in Houston, making it a standout option for Mexican cuisine in the area.
Community and Final Thoughts
In both Mexico City and Houston, Los Cochinitos is generally seen as a delightful spot for families or groups seeking a festive atmosphere and robust carnitas. While pricing may be a concern for some, the quality food and lively environment frequently overshadow those criticisms. It’s a worthwhile choice for anyone seeking traditional Mexican flavors and a dining experience that celebrates festivity and hospitality.
